One of the drawbacks is the long waiting list. In addition, when a military family moves to a new area, they may not be able to receive the services and support provided by living on-base (and thus would be better off finding a temporary hotel or lodging).
Military housing is also overcrowded in some areas. Families who live off-base often stay in hotels while waiting for their military house.
Depending on availability, there are no restrictions on how long families can reside in hotels before moving into base housing. This provides an opportunity for military families to maximize their choices when searching for temporary accommodations during TDY orders. Some bases have limited options of rental properties, so it can be difficult and costly for military families to find housing off-base.
